What is Wellmune®?

Wellmune® is a unique baker’s yeast beta-glucan (BYBG), a highly refined polysaccharide (1,3/1,6 beta-glucan)1,2 isolated from the cell wall of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It is a 100% natural ingredient with demonstrated immunomodulatory effects.3-5

Key actions and benefits of Wellmune®:

  • Post exercise it has been shown in scientific studies to:
  • Stimulate a healthy immune system response.
  • Maintain healthy immune system function and health.
  • Support the immune system to fight illness.
  • Enhance immune defence
  • Relieves the duration of the common cold

How does Wellmune® work?

The structure and source of beta-glucans is key to the biological activity they drive within the body. For example, beta-glucans derived from oats behave as dietary fibre that has a positive effect on metabolic health (such as improving the insulin response and regulating blood lipids). Whereas beta-glucans derived from yeast act as immune modulators that explicitly target the immune response and, notably, our first line of defence, known as the innate immune response.2 This is important as innate immunity prevents harmful pathogens from entering the body so Wellmune® has been shown to help the immune system function optimally. Emerging research has also shown that ingredients, such as BYBG, improve immuno-surveillance and pathogen elimination to mount a more effective immunological response.2

Wellmune® has been scientifically studied with results showing there was a reduction in common cold symptoms compared to placebo.1,3 Results from further research reviewing the effect of BYBG in marathon runners showed that doses of 250 mg or 500 mg for 4-12 weeks after the marathon produced a statistically significant (p<0.05) reduction in Upper Respiratory Tract Infection (URTI) symptoms and improved general health.4,5 Another analysis found that athletes supplementing with 250 mg of BYBG for 10 days before a strenuous 50-minute cycling session experienced a 32% increase in mucosal immunity at two hours after exercise.4

While findings on the health benefits of BYBG continues to emerge, studies to-date have shown that daily supplementation with BYBG, such as Wellmune®, can have a positive impact on immune health.

Food sources of Wellmune®

Beta glucans are naturally found in foods such as baker’s yeast, shiitake mushrooms, and cereal grains, like barley, oats, rye, and wheat. If you would like to learn more, contact your local healthcare professional to learn more.
